Earith

Earith is village of around 1,500 people and one of the best places to get a sense of the work undertaken to create the Fens as they are now.

By the village is the start of the Old and New Bedford Rivers - two parallel channels running for 31 km were designed to keep the Fens well drained and allow the fertile land to be cultivated.

In between the two is a series of washes which can flood when needed and at the Earith end is an earthwork which is all that remains of a Civil War fortress, the Earith Bulwark.

Nearby RSPB Ouse Fen gives an opportunity to see some of the wildlife that lives here now.
